Fireside Chat with Egyptian Cyclist Mina Ihab

Cycling is a great sport and stimulating activity that most of us have learned years ago. For a lot of us, that’s all cycling is; just something we used to do when we were kids – However, for Mina Ihab (@acyclistfromcairo on the gram), that is certainly not the case. Other than the usual cycling-as-a-kid phase, Mina has now been cycling for 3 years in a row, and it doesn’t look like he’s quitting anytime soon, here’s why.

He first started cycling just to get around from place to place, because, along with not being too fond of driving, he wanted to work on decreasing his carbon footprint (which, by the way, is very important if you don’t want the human race to die out in 10 years). Then, as he started getting deeper into the world of cycling, he fell in love with it more and more, experimenting around until he finally got into professional cycling. To him, cycling is both a challenge and a luxury. He has his usual weekend ride with his other cycling buddies on highways, which include difficult climbs, regular intervals, and maybe even some music. To him, and many others around the world, it’s therapeutic; to empty your mind of ugly stressful thoughts and let your bike take you away.

You’re probably wondering how Mina fell so deeply in love with cycling, but really, it’s quite simple: like everyone else, he found something that stimulated his thinking, challenged him and brought him closer to himself and the people around him, and cherished it. Cycling became his refuge, a place where his mind was tranquil, and, honestly, who can blame him? It’s pretty easy to find yourself when it’s just you and the road.

Although life in Egypt is not very encouraging towards this sport, which is, to say the least, absolutely insane because not only does this sport greatly benefit one’s health, but it is also extremely environmentally friendly,  Mina has found his way around with a few very simple rules: find the right bike for you and only you; find your favorite route (preferably one that doesn’t have too many potholes), and finally, don’t go too hard, you don’t want to arrive all sweaty to your destination, after all.

Something as simple as cycling for commuting can lead you to your yet-to-be-discovered passion, so maybe you really should start trying new things. In a nutshell, you have everything to win and nothing to lose.
