Self-care is the art of being able to love yourself to the point where you are able to look after yourself, independently, in times of need.
However, thanks to today’s media, a disappointingly large number of people seem to confuse SELF-care with SKINcare. Self-care goes way deeper than just face masks and lip scrubs.
It is in our human instinct to care for ourselves. In fact, almost everything we do in our daily lives is a way to care for ourselves, but this article is not about subconscious self-care.
This article, as previously mentioned, is about how you look after yourself when you are feeling down.
Undoubtedly, different people respond differently to stress and therefore have different methods for caring after themselves: you may find reading relaxing, while your friend/sibling/parent may find face mask (yes, face masks) more soothing.
Your neighbour might prefer just listening to music.
Your aunt might prefer eating her favourite comfort foods.
Your little brother might prefer taking it out on his controller.
Your dad might prefer watching sports games, just to feel the rush.
Your best friend might prefer crying it out in their room (which is okay, by the way, as long as they don’t hurt themself, physically or mentally)
You might want to binge your favourite series, or drink some tea, or just sit and think, or cry it out, or listen to music, or even do sports. Whatever makes you feel better, and causes you no harm.
So basically, making yourself feel better is not limited to taking care of your skin or smashing dishes, as the media so obviously portrays. You get to do whatever you want to feel better, as long as you don’t harm anyone, including yourself.
